Trick-or-Treat

Trick-or-Treaters

  • Make sure you do not Trick or Treat alone. Always go with someone like a parent, a friend or relative. The more, the scarier! Opps! I mean merrier.
  • Always carry a flashlight and wear refective tape so that cars can see you in the dark.
  • Do not criss cross roads. Go to the houses down one side of the street first. Cross the street at the corner and then go to the houses down the other side.
  • If a person stops their car and talks to you, ignore them and get away. No matter what they are saying, asking, or offering you (including Halloween candy) get away from that car. Go to the nearest house and tell them that someone in a car was bothering you.
  • If you have to go to the bathroom while you are Trick or Treating, go home or to a friends house and use the bathroom. Never enter a strangers house.
  • If someone asks you into their house do not go in. Politely say "No, thanks" and move on to the next house. I can't stress this enough!
  • If you get lost while you are Trick or Treating, look for a REAL police officer (not someone in a police costume) Or, if you cannot find one or are unsure if one is real or not, ask someone to call your house for you and tell your parents to come and pick you up. Remember not to go inside the house if a person is calling your home for you. Give them your telephone number and let them know you will be waiting outside for your ride to pick you up.
  • If your friend becomes sick while Trick-or-Treating, take your friend home immediately.
  • Do not touch strange animals. Halloween is a scary time for some animals. A dog or cat that is familiar to you and has always been kind in the past, may not recognize you and they will bite!
  • NEVER eat your Halloween candy until you get home, or to a friends house and an adult has looked over the candy to make sure it is safe for you to eat.
  • If there is a house that has no lights on, avoid the house. The people may not be home and dark shadowy yards are not safe for trick-or-treaters.
  • Never touch dry ice with bare hands! Use a large spoon or food grabbers. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide and shouldn't be inhaled directly for any great length of time (although it's not poisonous it's still not oxygen) contact a poison control center if you have any concerns or questions.
  • Never use a sharp knife to cut out your pumpkin. Let an adult do it for you. You can draw on the face and your parents can cut out the images.

    The Adults

  • Make your child eat dinner before setting out.
  • Children should carry quarters so they can call home.
  • Young children should be accompanied by an adult.
  • If your children go on their own, be sure they wear a watch, (one that can be read in the dark)
  • If you buy a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material.
  • You should know where your kids are going.
  • Make sure your yard is clear of such things as ladders, hoses, dog leashes and flower pots that can trip the young ones.
  • Pets get frightened on Halloween. Put them in a fenced backyard or a room they do not have access to the kids.
  • Battery powered jack o'lantern candles are preferable to a real flame. If you do use candles, place the pumpkin well away from where trick-or-treaters will be walking or standing.
  • Drive VERY slow all evening. Halloween partiers should have a designated driver.
